Registrations open for Hypo Awareness Week 2024

Participants join in last year’s Hypo Awareness Week campaign

The eagerly anticipated annual campaign Hypo Awareness Week returns this October, with the aim of raising crucial awareness of hypoglycaemia among healthcare professionals in the UK and Ireland.

Building on the incredible success of last year’s campaign, which saw over 500 primary and secondary care sites across the UK and Ireland take part in seminars, courses and activities to promote best practices, Hypo Awareness Week 2024 aims to increase understanding of hypoglycaemia.

Hypoglycaemia — commonly referred to as hypos — occurs when a person’s blood glucose level is too low. It must be treated quickly, as in severe cases, it can be life-threatening.

Among hospitalised patients, hypoglycaemia is associated with adverse outcomes, including increased morbidity and mortality.

Event manager Emily Mayhew said: “Hypo Awareness Week is an important opportunity for nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff to come together and strengthen their knowledge and understanding.

“Those who take part play a vital role in sharing the signs, symptoms and treatments of hypos among their non-specialist colleagues, ensuring careful management of in-patients, which can provide direct and immediate benefits.”

Open to all healthcare professionals working in diabetes care, early sign up is encouraged for the campaign, which will be held Monday, October 7, to Sunday, October 13, to ensure access to the comprehensive printed and online resources.
